Critical literacy for every learner.

Reading for understanding is one thing. Reading for critical analysis, decision-making, and navigating our complex world is quite another. Every learner deserves the opportunity to develop critical literacy skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives.

Critical literacy, defined.

Critical literacy is a skill-set that involves the ability to analyze and question texts and media beyond their surface meanings–investigating their contexts, sources, purpose, techniques, and motivations. Critical literacy aims to develop informed, active citizens who can navigate complexity, recognize bias, and avoid the pitfalls of misinformation.

At Kujali, we advocate for strong literacy foundations among early learners–and a continued focus on critical literacy throughout the K-12 journey.

“Narrating Local Climate Change: Telling Current And Future MA Stories With Eco Memoir and Eco Speculation”

Kujali has been awarded a grant through Mass Humanities to support the design of a free grade 6-12 curriculum unit rooted in the humanities, environmental justice, and place-based education. The unit focuses on engaging students in writing eco-memoir and eco-speculative fiction based on their exploration of local climate change issues.

Student Resources for Deeper Learning

The research on learning is clear–one key ingredient to learning, memory, and developing expertise is conceptual understanding. Kujali creates student-friendly "concept briefs" to help make these threshold disciplinary concepts–and the relationships among them– transparent and accessible for learners.
